Ontario Athletes Make History at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

TORONTO (August 9, 2021) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) would like to congratulate Team Canada on a successful Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The Canadian Team delivered inspiring and powerful performances, bringing home 24 medals – 7 Gold, 6 Silver, 11 Bronze. Canada brings home the most medals at an Olympic Summer Games since Los Angeles 1984!

Ontario athletes dominated at the Games with 170 Ontario athletes winning a total of 16 medals – 5 Gold, 4 Silver, 7 Bronze. Ontario athletes won 67% of Team Canada’s medals.

Many Ontario and CSIO affiliated athletes made history at the Games, but none more so than Penny Oleksiak who swam her way to being Canada’s most decorated Olympian of all-time with 7 Olympic medals. Penny added three medals (1 Silver, 2 Bronze) to her collection at Tokyo 2020 in an impressive display of speed and determination in the water.

Penny was just one of many CSIO affiliated athletes to bring home the hardware for Team Canada, including her Medley Relay teammates Maggie Mac Neil and Kylie Masse who each won three medals in Tokyo.

From the water to the field, the mat to the track, CSIO affiliated athletes won an impressive 19 medals in Tokyo – 6 Gold, 4 Silver, 9 Bronze.

  • Andre De Grasse won the first Men’s 200m Gold medal for Canada in 93 years; he also became the most decorated male Canadian Olympian of all time with 6 medals combined from Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016.
