CALGARY, ALBERTA – Alberta’s Matej Pederson and Quebec’s Mégan Boudrias were crowned Canadian Junior Short Track Champions at the Olympic Oval in Calgary on Sunday. Each skater earned the most points among their respective fields of 32 skaters to capture the titles at the national competition, which was presented by Intact Insurance.

On the women’s side, Boudrias (Repentigny, Que.) reached the podium in all three distances, winning gold in the 500m and 1000m, along with bronze in the 1500m. The 19 year old, who finished eighth at this fall’s Canadian Short Track Championships, took the top spot in the overall junior rankings after earning 20,000 points in her top two distances.

Meanwhile, 18 year old Pederson finished atop the men’s standings with gold in the 1000m, silver in the 500m and an eighth-place result in the 1500m. With 18,000 points in his best two distances, the Calgary native and 2019 World Junior Championship participant improved upon his third-place result from the same competition last season.

  • Rounding out the overall women’s podium were Florence Brunelle (Trois-Rivières, Que.) with 18,000 points and Léa Chamberland-Dostie (Trois-Rivières, Que.) with 14,400 points. Brunelle won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 1000m, while Chamberland-Dostie took silver in the 1500m and bronze in 500m.
  • Also brining home medals were Lea Tessier (Blainville, Que.) with silver in the 500m and Claudia Heeney (Waterloo, Ont.) with bronze in the 1000m.
  • Philippe Daudelin (Trois-Rivières, Que.) was a close second in the men’s rankings with 16,000 points thanks to a pair of silver medals in the 1000m and 1500m, while Nicolas Perreault (Sherbrooke, Que.), who won gold in the 1500m, edged out 500m winner Félix Pigeon (Saint-Pie, Que.) in a points tie-breaker for third overall.
  • Also finding the podium were Antoine Gagnon-Lamarche (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que.) with bronze in the 1000m and Alexandre Noel (Trois-Rivières, Que.) with bronze in the 1500m.

The results from the 2019 Canadian Junior Short Track Championships will be used to select the team of four women and four men who will compete at the ISU World Junior Short Track Championships in Bormio, Italy from January 31 to February 2. It will also help decide who will represent Canada at the Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in January, a first for the Canadian short track team.

“I got off to a bit of a rocky start after a crash in the 1500m, but my theme of this weekend was “it’s not over until it’s over”. I had a couple of close 500m races but managed to make it through the rounds and pick up a silver medal. And I’m really happy with my gold medal in the 1000m.”

– Matej Pederson
“My goal this weekend was simply to qualify myself for the World Juniors. And I was hoping to get gold in the 500m given that it’s my specialty. I believed in myself throughout the weekend and that helped me earn some pretty good results.”

– Mégan Boudrias
