Calgary, AB. (Feb 11, 2024) — Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) won her third consecutive race at today’s women’s FIS Ski Cross World Cup at Bakuriani (GEO). This is Thompson’s fourth win in her last five World Cup races and extends her lead in the season standings.
In her 132nd World Cup start Thompson a had dominating day, winning all her heats for her 65th World Cup podium and the 29th victory of her career.
“I tried to be better each run today and to ski clean the whole way down,” said Thompson. “I learned from last year at the World Championships here that small mistakes can make you lose speed very quickly. The start was quite important, so I just did my best to be quick and powerful out of the gate and to go from there.”
It was a strong performance by Canada’s women with India Sherret (Cranbrook, BC) finishing fourth and Brittany Phelan (Mont-Tremblant, QC), coming off back-to-back second place finishes, taking sixth today. Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) didn’t start due to an injured ankle.
On the men’s side, Carson Cook (Edmonton, AB) was the only Canadian man competing today and he finished 28th.
At today’s FIS Ski World Cup women’s slalom at Soldeau (AND) it was Ali Nullmeyer (Toronto, ON) leading the Canadians. Nullmeyer stood fourth after the first run before finishing seventh for her third top 10 this season. Laurence St-Germain (St. Ferréol-les-Neiges, QC) was 19th today, while Amelia Smart (Invermere, BC) and Sarah Bennett (Stoneham, QC) did not advance to the second run.
“I’m stoked with today’s result, especially after some tough races, and happy to be back feeling good on my skis,” said Nullmeyer. “Think my first run today was really solid. I went for it the whole way down and super happy about that. The second run started solid as well and then I backed off a little at the bottom. I know where I can improve and I’m excited to keep working on things.”
