Junior men off to a solid start at U21 Pan Am Cup

Golf Canada – LIMA, Peru – Canada defeated Chile 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15) in the first game of Pool B at the U21 Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup, an event that is also a qualifier for the U21 Volleyball World Championship.

Canada’s strong serving made a difference in its tournament opener on Sunday. Canada had 13 direct points in serve, and was also dominant in attacks (45-22) and blocks (8-4). Chile kept its unforced errors to 31, while the winning team had 43.

Canadians Xander Ketrzynski and Michael Dowhaniuk were the top scorers with 21 and 19 points respectively; followed by Brodie Hofer with 11 points. For Chile, the top individual scorer was Vicente Ibarra with nine points.

“We were looking to put pressure from the beginning with serving and blocking,” said Canada’s team captain, Michael Dowhaniuk of White Rock, BC, told norceca.net. “We are very happy that the result was achieved and to start the tournament with victory.”

Canada will open the second day of action of Pool B, on Monday, May 6 at 2:00 pm local (3 pm ET) playing Colombia.
