Hannah Schmidt Tops Ski Cross World Cup Podium
Calgary, AB. (January 16, 2025) — In the first race back after the holiday break, Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) started the new year with a win at today’s FIS Ski Cross World Cup race in Reiteralm (AUT). This is Schmidt’s second podium this season and her first win since back-to-back wins last January at the World Cup stop in Nakiska, AB.
Under a bright blue sky in the sixth of 17 races this season, Schmidt led a strong performance by Canadian women who took four of the top six places. India Sherret (Cranbrook, BC) placed third today for her third podium this season, Courtney Hoffos (Windermere, BC) in her 45th World Cup start, and just her fourth race since returning from injury, won the small final to take fifth, and Brittany Phelan (Mont-Tremblant, QC), in her first race of the season, was sixth.
“I had a blast today,” said a smiling Schmidt. “I had some good starts and skied aggressively. I had Lady Gaga in my head telling me to have some fun and today was a really fun race.”
“Super happy to be back racing with the girls,” added Phelan. “Super stoked with my skiing today and excited for another go at it tomorrow.”
Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) in ninth and Abby McEwen (Edmonton, AB) in 11th were the other two Canadian women racing today.
On the men’s side, Kevin Drury (Toronto, ON) was the top Canadian in 11th, with Kris Mahler (Canmore, AB) in 17th and Gavin Rowell (Prince George, BC) 22nd.
