Halifax to Host World Cup of Tennis as Team Canada Heads to East Coast for September Davis Cup tie

[TORONTO, ON] May 15, 2025 – Tennis Canada will host the Davis Cup World Group I tie between
Team Canada and Israel at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia from September 12-13, it
confirmed on Thursday. The tie will determine which of the two nations will compete in next year’s Davis
Cup Qualifiers in the World Cup of Tennis.

“We’re excited to take our Davis Cup tie to the East Coast and to Halifax this September,” said Team
Canada captain Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, ON). “I personally have fond memories of playing there
having been part of the last tie we hosted in the city. We know how special it is to play in front of a home
crowd, and we’re looking forward to seeing the arena rocking. Halifax is also an emerging region for
tennis, so we hope this tie can inspire even more Nova Scotians to pick up a racquet and play the sport
we love.”

Chile were the opponents in 2016; the last time Team Canada hosted a Davis Cup tie in Halifax. A 5-0
victory included wins in singles for Dancevic against Cristian Garin and Gonzalo Lama, Vasek Pospisil
(Vernon, BC) over Nicolas Jarry and Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON), also over Garin. In doubles,
Pospisil and Adil Shamasdin (Toronto, ON), now part of Team Canada’s coaching staff, came out on top
against Jarry and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo.

Canada, ranked No. 6 in the world, will be hoping for a similar result against Israel (No. 30), which would
extend their record to 10 wins in their last 12 home ties. When they last faced each other in 2011, Canada
won a closely contested tie 3-2 in Israel with Pospisil clinching the decisive rubber against Amir
Weintraub.
