Calgary, Alta. (March 16, 2023) – The day after his first World Cup win in five years, Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, QC), went back-to-back capturing gold in today’s giant slalom (GS) at the 2022_23 FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Cortina, Italy. Guimond also won gold in yesterday’s GS.
Guimond was in second place after the first run, and then produced a blistering second run to take
the lead and win by .5 of a second. This is Guimond’s seventh podium this season and includes a bronze in the downhill at the World Championships and a gold in yesterday’s GS at these World Cup Finals.
“I couldn’t be happier,” said a pleased Guimond. “It’s a great way to wrap up the season. I really wanted to push to the end of this season and these results give me confidence heading into next season. Now I need to keep this consistency going forward and maybe get my hands on a Crystal Globe.”
Other Canadians in action today were Kurt Oatway (Calgary, AB) finishing fifth in men sitting and Logan Leach (Lumby, BC) racing to sixth in the men visually impaired race.
Under a bright blue sky at the final super-G race of the season at the 2022-23 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals in Soldeu, Andorra, Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) finished a World Cup career best fifth. This is Read’s second top 10 this season and his fifth consecutive top 30.
“It was a really good race today,” said a smiling Read. “It’s very sunny today so the conditions were soft. I was fortunate enough to draw bib number four which was huge. I knew I had to take advantage of my early start and I came down with a solid run. Really happy to end the season with some strong skiing that I can build on through the summer.”
James (Jack) Crawford (Toronto, ON) the only other Canadian to compete today, missed a gate and
didn’t finish his run. Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC) also qualified for the super-G World Cup Finals but was not able to compete due to an injury.
