Gill and Ginzburg Win Double Gold on Day 2 of Short Course Nationals

SHERBROOKE – Day 2 of the 2025 Speedo Canadian Short Course Championships was once again packed with fast swimming and numerous records. Jagdev Gill (McGill) was focused and ready to win when he first jumped in for the para multiclass 100-m freestyle, which he swam in 56.26, followed by another title 20 minutes later in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:13.71. The other double champion was Eric Ginzburg, from RAMAC Aquatic Club, who won both the 100-m freestyle (47.83) and the 50-m butterfly (23.13).

Bridget Burton (Island Swimming/High Performance Centre – Vancouver) had a very packed schedule with three events in 50 minutes: the 100-m freestyle, 50-m backstroke, and 50-m butterfly. She won the national title in the 50-m backstroke with a time of 27.39, and was able to finish strong with a personal best in the 50-m butterfly in 26.98. “This evening was definitely very intense, but I loved it. The 50 fly isn’t an event we see often, so my goal was to have fun with it, and I’m very happy with my time tonight. It was my first time swimming it under 27 seconds,” she said. Burton also won the title in the 100-m backstroke on day 1 of the Championships.

Bianca Baccus (Pointe-Claire Swim Club) was a finalist again tonight, this time in the 400-m medley. The 13-year-old swimmer is soaking everything she can from her first experience at nationals. “It’s incredible to be here against some of the best swimmers in the country,” she said after her final, in which she ranked fifth with a time of 4:55.11. “I’m learning a lot, and it’s impressive to see how fast the others are swimming.”

Para swimmers were still going strong tonight with several Americas records falling: Alisson Gobeil (Club de natation Juvanaq Alma) in the S5 50-m backstroke in both prelims and finals (59.60 and 58.12), Arianna Hunsicker (Côte St-Luc Aquatic) in the S10 100-m freestyle also in both prelims and finals (1:02.46 and 1:01.14), and Nicolas-Guy Turbide (Club de natation région de Québec) in the S13 50-m backstroke (26.53). Danielle Dorris (Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club) lowered the S7 50-m backstroke world record in 35.20, and Riley Martin (KISU Swim Club) broke two Canadian records: the SB4 100-m breaststroke (2:07.81) and S4 50-m backstroke (1:01.21).

CAMO was the team to beat after winning three out of four titles in today’s relays (men’s 4×50 medley, women’s 4×50 freestyle, and men’s 4×50 freestyle) and earning the top spot on the team ranking as of tonight.

The meet will continue at the Centre sportif de l’Université de Sherbrooke until Sunday. Tickets are available for sale here, and a live stream is available for both prelims and finals every day.
