First Olympics a Heartbreaker for Margo Erlam

Montréal, August 7, 2024 – It was a day of firsts for diver Margo Erlam, who made her Olympic debut on Wednesday at the Saint-Denis Aquatic Centre in Paris. Competing in the 3-metre springboard event, the Canadian placed 22nd in the preliminaries with a total of 258.30 points, falling just short of a pass to the semi-finals.

“Today was a bit of a let-down. I would have liked to obtain a better result, but still, I’m proud of the work I put in to get this far,” said the athlete from Calgary, visibly disappointed as she exited the pool.

Erlam’s finest performances in the battle for 18th place—only the top 18 advance to the next round—were during her third and fourth dives, for which she received scores of 61.50 and 58.50.

She then pinned all her hopes on her fifth and final dive, but her score of 42.00 was not enough to edge out Cuba’s Anisley Garcia Navarro (272.40 points), the last athlete to qualify for the semi-finals.

Despite her disappointment, the 22-year-old athlete will focus on the positive elements of her first Olympic Games, which will remain forever engraved in her memory.

“I don’t think it has sunk in yet,” she said, when questioned poolside. “Before today, which was a difficult day, I had a great Olympic experience. I appreciated every moment, and it’s been a dream come true for me. It’s a heartbreaker, but it has also been very exciting, and now I’m an Olympian for life!” she concluded.

Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray, who won bronze in the 10-metre synchronized event last week, will be the last two Canadians to dive at the Paris Olympic Games. They will compete in the preliminary rounds of the men’s individual event on Friday, with the goal of advancing to the finals, which will be held 24 hours later.
