SHERBROOKE – Danielle Dorris, from Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club, swam to victory in the para multiclass 100-m medley tonight in a world record time of 1:22.57 in the SM7 category after an Americas record this morning in 1:23.50. “Coming into this meet, I was expecting to break a few records, but tonight was a bit of a surprise. I didn’t know exactly what the previous record was, so I didn’t know if I could lower it. I’m definitely very happy that it worked, and it’s a nice confidence boost before going into Worlds in Singapore next month,” she explained. She has also lowered the world records in the 50-m backstroke and the 50-m butterfly earlier this week. Dorris will swim the 50-m freestyle tomorrow to conclude the meet. Clémence Paré, from Club de natation SAMAK, lowered the Americas record in the 100-m medley as well in the SM5 category with a time of 2:15.85, and Abi Tripp, from Club de natation région de Québec, broke the Canadian record in the S8 400-m freestyle in 5:19.55.
Riley Martin, from KISU Swim Club, established a new world record in the SM4 75-m medley after his third attempt in two days. He swam the event in prelims and finals on day 2 of the meet, but a technical issue made his time ineligible as a world record. The issue was fixed today, and his third attempt in this morning’s prelims, the fastest one by far in 1:32.63, made the new record official. This new feat happened after he had already lowered seven Americas record (50-100-200-m freestyle S4, 50-100-m backstroke S4, 50-m butterfly S4, 100-m medley SM4) and a Canadian para record (100-m breaststroke SB4), meaning he has lowered records in every single event he swam so far. Martin will be finishing off his swimming career with the SM4 150-m medley tomorrow, as he will be retiring after this meet.
Eric Ginzburg, from RAMAC Aquatic Club, won his third gold medal of the week in the 100-m butterfly in 51.64. “Having a short course championship in August is pretty new, and at first, I was a bit confused, but I like it. It’s fun to race short course, and it’s a good set up for the next season,” he said. “I still have the 50-m free tomorrow, and I’m really excited about it. I did well so far this week, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race, it’ll be fun.” Bridget Burton, from Island Swimming/High Performance Centre – Vancouver, also won her third gold medal of the week (fourth total), in the 200-m backstroke with a time of 2:06.96. This third medal was the only one missing to make her the undisputed backstroke champion on the meet, after winning gold in the 100-m on day 1 and the 50-m on day 2. Seo-Yeong Kim, from Toronto Swim Club, is also a triple gold medallist this week after winning the title in the 100-m butterfly with a time of 57.98.
The evening concluded with an exhilarating race in the men’s 4×100-m freestyle relay. Cascade Swim Club was almost three seconds behind the lead at the halfway mark, but managed to climb back up the ranks in the second half of the race to steal the victory by .09 seconds at the very end.
The action will continue tomorrow at the Centre sportif de l’Université de Sherbrooke with a final day of exciting races and records. Tickets are available for sale here, and a live stream is available for both prelims and finals every day.
