Denis Shapovalov Claims ATP 250 Mifel Tennis Open, his Second Title of the Season

[TORONTO, ON] July 20, 2025 – Canada’s Denis Shapovalov (Richmond Hill, ON) claimed his second ATP Tour title of the season, defeating American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday night’s final of the 250-level Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo. He is now the sixth man to win multiple Tour-level titles in 2025.

Shapovalov entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, which earned him an automatic bye into the round of 16. His road to the title started with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over American qualifier Govind Nanda, a match that lasted just over an hour. The 26-year-old kept up his impressive form in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, defeating Australians Tristan Schoolkate 6-3, 6-2 and Adam Walton 6-2, 6-2. Heading into the championship match, Shapovalov had not dropped a set and had only been broken twice.

Kovacevic, the tournament’s No. 7 seed, reached the title match with wins over Hady Habib of Lebanon (6-1, 3-6, 6-3), wild-card recipient Luis Carlos Alvaraz Valdes of Mexico (7-5, 6-4), Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina (6-3, 6-1) and top-seed Andrey Rublev (3-6, 6-4, 6-4). His victory over Rublev, the world No. 10, was his second against a Top 10 opponent.

The championship match in Los Cabos, Mexico, featured a rarity as it was the first ATP Tour final since 2019 to be contested between two players with one-handed backhands. Shapovalov got off to a flying start, breaking Kovacevic right off the bat en route to taking the first set 6-4. In the second set, Shapovalov picked up where he left off, once again breaking Kovacevic’s opening service game. He managed to maintain the momentum right up to match point in the eighth game, which he sealed with an ace – his sixth of the match.

Shapovalov is now the fourth player to win an ATP Tour event without dropping a set this season. The title is the fourth of his career and the first on an outdoor hard court. Shapovalov will climb to No. 28 when the rankings update on Monday, and will be seeded heading into his home tournament, the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

“We have been working for quite a few years now and it hasn’t been easy coming back from injury. But all the work we’ve done, it is really paying off,” said Shapovalov.
