MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Courtney Sarault and William Dandjinou finished atop the overall standings following a grueling five days of racing at the 2025 Canadian Short Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance in Montreal, bringing home the second national titles of their respective careers.
It was all Sarault on the women’s side, as the Moncton native earned two more gold medals on Sunday to finish the competition a perfect nine-for-nine. Her 30,000 points across her top six distances gave her a comfortable lead over the next closest competitor, Kim Boutin, who finished with 21,760 points.
Sarault raced past the pack on the outside to move into the top spot with three laps remaining in the women’s 1500m-3 final, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:39,528 to capture her eighth gold medal of the competition. Danaé Blais (Châteauguay, Que.) and Florence Brunelle (Trois-Rivières, Que.) were in a battle for the silver medal and crossed the line with near identical times (2:39,769), but Brunelle was penalized for making contact during an earlier pass, a decision that propelled fourth-place finisher Ann-Sophie Bachand (Sherbrooke, Que.) onto the podium in bronze medal position (2:40,350).
The 25-year-old wrapped up the day, and the competition, with a hard-fought ninth gold medal in the 500m-3, posting a time of 0:42,988 and besting challengers Brunelle (0:43,594) and Victoria Jean-Baptiste (0:43,686), who finished second and third, respectively.
“It feels unbelievable! Coming into this competition, I didn’t expect to have this great of results, but I got the job done and then some, so I’m super excited and proud of myself.”Courtney Sarault
Dandjinou and Roussel entered the final day of competition in a heated battle for the top spot on the men’s side, with the reigning Crystal Globe winner narrowly edging out his teammate by 1000 points – 28,000 to 27,000 – to repeat as overall champion.
Dandjinou and Roussel were at the front of the pack in the 1500m-3 final, before Dandjinou lost an edge during a last-minute pass attempt that caused both skaters to crash into the protective matts. The race was won by Laval’s Mathieu Pelletier (2:16,603), who was joined on the podium by Maxime Laoun (Montreal, Que.) and Philippe Daudelin (Trois-Rivières, Que.), who posted times of 2:16,687 and 2:17,304, respectively.
Dandjinou reached the podium in the final distance of the weekend, grabbing silver (0:41,666) in the 500m-3 to secure the national crown. He finished the race behind Laoun (0:41,049) and ahead of Pelletier (0:41,755), while Roussel was fifth.
“I feel pretty good. These past two weekends have been quite difficult. I got the job done, but if I’m honest, I didn’t do it the way I wanted to. I was strategic but I feel I wasn’t necessarily the best skater during this competition. That tells me that I still have a lot of work to do.”William Dandjinou
