Courtney Sarault and Félix Roussel Capture 1000m Gold on Saturday at Canadian Short Track Championships

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Courney Sarault and Félix Roussel captured gold in the 1000m-3 on Saturday morning, the only distance contested during the fourth day of racing at the 2025 Canadian Short Track Championships presented by Intact Insurance in Montreal.

Sarault grabbed the lead with three laps remaining in the women’s final thanks to an outside pass on Danaé Blais (Châteauguay, Que.) and inside pass on Florence Brunelle (Trois-Rivières, Que.). The 25-year-old Moncton native crossed the finish line with a time of 1:29,214, extending her gold medal streak to seven races. Ann-Sophie Bachand (Sherbrooke, Que.) also made a double pass to move from fourth to second and secure the silver medal (1:29,982), while Blais finished in bronze medal position (1:30,352).

« Today, I’m super happy. My objective was to have fun and be confident in my races, and I think I did excalty that during the final. I hope to repeat that same mentality tomorrow, with the hopes of reaching the podium once again, » said Ann-Sophie Bachand.

It was an equally exciting final on the men’s side, as Roussel (Sherbrooke, Que.) passed overall points leader William Dandjinou (Montreal, Que.) in the final lap to earn his third gold medal of the competition (1:25,144) and finish as the top ranked 1000m skater with 14,000 points. Dandjinou settled for his second silver medal of the event (1:25,379), while Laval’s Mathieu Pelletier took bronze with a time of 1:25,672.

« Winning gold in the 1000m was a very nice victory for me. It’s the distance that I typically have the the most success in, so to be able to perform and build upon what I’ve accomplished in it over the past two seasons is encourging. I’m going to keep trying my best to catch up to William in the overall standings, » said Félix Roussel.

The 2025 Canadian Short Track Championships come to an end on Sunday, where national titles will be awarded following the third 500m and 1500m of the competition. Races will be live streamed on Speed Skating Canada’s YouTube channels, as well as on CBC Sports and Radio-Canada Sports digital platforms.
