Clare Gillespie’s significant contributions and unwavering dedication to the development and success of collegiate sports in Canada have left an indelible mark on the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Gillespie was inducted into the CCAA Hall of Fame in the Builder Category during the Association’s 50th Anniversary Gala in Ottawa, ON on June 11, 2024.

Gillespie’s remarkable journey with the CCAA began in 1986, a time of financial uncertainty. Her appointment as Executive Director was a testament to her background in recreation and extensive experience within the Canadian sport system. Her passion and dedication were evident as she swiftly restored the CCAA’s operational stability and expanded its influence. Gillespie’s efforts were instrumental in the establishment of a partnership with the Centre for Drug-Free Sport and the execution of a crucial research project funded by Sport Canada, to identify the CCAA’s status role within the Canadian Sport System.

During her tenure as Executive Director, Gillespie spearheaded numerous initiatives that elevated the CCAA’s profile and ensured its stability during challenging times. One of her most notable accomplishments was securing a partnership with TSN to televise the Men’s Basketball Finals held at Lethbridge Community College. This landmark achievement provided nationwide exposure for the CCAA, showcasing the talent and spirit of collegiate athletes across Canada.

Reflecting on her career, Gillespie remarked, “Being selected as a 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Hall of Fame inductee is an honour. Sports has always been a huge part of my life; working in that environment with the CCAA was truly a fulfilling experience for me.”

Gillespie’s leadership was pivotal during the Sport Canada Review of the CCAA, a comprehensive evaluation that involved face-to-face meetings with colleges and conferences nationwide. Her efforts culminated in a new partnership with Sport Canada and other national sports agencies, reinforcing the CCAA’s role within the Canadian sport system.

Gillespie’s time with the CCAA was defined by the amazing people she met and worked with across Canada. Her fondest memories were not just about achievements, but about the personal connections and collaborative spirit that made her feel a part of something bigger. This sense of belonging and camaraderie is what truly defined her time with the association.

As we celebrate Clare Gillespie’s induction into the CCAA Hall of Fame, we acknowledge her exceptional contributions to the survival and growth of collegiate sports in Canada.
