Canadian Divers Well-Prepared for Day One of Canada Cup

Montréal, June 5, 2025 – The 2025 Canada Cup got underway on Thursday in Gatineau with the men’s 3m springboard and women’s 10m platform qualifiers and repechages.

The top eight divers in the qualifying rounds earned a spot in the final, to a maximum of two athletes per country. The remaining contenders received a second chance to qualify in the repechage, where the top four advanced to the next round.

Ontario’s Victor Povzner made his intentions very clear, finishing first in the qualifiers with a score of 375.35 points. Although the 23-year-old was provisionally fourth after two dives, he came from behind at the end of the round to secure the top spot.

Cédric Fofana also secured a berth in the final, finishing third with 351.70 points. Japan’s Reo Sakata (358.20) slipped in between the two Canadians.

“I’m happy, although I’m not totally satisfied,” said Fofana. “But it was enough to allow me to advance straight to the finals, and I know that the errors I made were not major ones and that I can rectify them for the finals, so that’s good.”

In preparation for the upcoming finals, the Montrealer will focus on perfecting his finishes. “It’s really just some fine-tuning,” explained Fofana, who was pleased to be competing before his family and friends.

After finishing seventh and eighth in the qualifiers, Claude-Olivier Lisé-Coderre and Sam McCaffrey had to go through the repechage to earn spots in the finals. Lisé-Coderre finished second with 360.10 points. McCaffrey was right behind him with 350.40.

“I’m very happy! Coming here, I had absolutely no expectations. I just wanted to do my best and gain as much experience as possible, because this is all new to me,” admitted Lisé-Coderre.

In the finals, the 16-year-old will take it one dive at a time. “I’m going to do my best, one dive at a time. If I do that, my results should be good,” explained Lisé-Coderre, who is competing at the international level as a senior for the very first time.

Carson Paul, who placed ninth in the qualifying rounds, also took the repechage route to qualify for the finals. He finished first, with 362.90 points.

The men’s 3m finals will take place on Saturday.

In the women’s 10m platform event, two Canadians advanced to the finals during the qualifiers. Finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, Éloïse Bélanger (279.0) and Ella Lindsay (272.0) will take part in the action on Saturday.

Ella Roselli of the USA dominated Thursday morning’s 10m qualification rounds, racking up 315.00 points to edge out her compatriot Ellireese Niday (295.75) and Australia’s Milly Puckeridge (287.40).

Mathilde Laberge secured a spot in the final by placing fourth in the repechage. With 262.85 points, the Montrealer obtained the last available berth in the 10m finals.

Julianne Boisvert (260.55) and Sarah Carruthers (239.15), who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, did not advance.

Friday’s schedule will feature the women’s 3m and men’s 10m qualifying rounds and repechages.
