Canada’s Para Alpine Team Takes Three Podium in St. Moritz
Calgary, AB. (January 11, 2025) — It was another day of strong performances from Canadian ski racers, this time at the FIS Para Alpine World Cup giant slalom in St. Moritz (SUI). Coming on the heels of a seven podium day earlier in the week in Santa Caterina, four Canadian athletes stood on the podium today, all racing to second place finishes.
Michaela Gosselin (Collingwood, ON) delivered two consistent runs today to take second place in women standing. Today’s podium gives Gosselin podiums in three straight races and five podiums in eight World Cup races this season.
“It’s my first giant slalom (GS) podium so I’m very excited with today’s result,” said a smiling Gosselin. “Thought that I skied well today, and always happy to be in St. Moritz.”
Kalle Ericsson (Kimberley, BC), and guide Sierra Smith (Ottawa, ON), took second place in men vision impaired, for their best result of the season and their third podium in a row.
“It was a good day of racing,” said Ericsson. “We were feeling good and in first place after the first run, but lost a couple of seconds in the second run to set us back a little. Still a great result and our best GS finish so far this season.”
Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, QC), in just his third day of World Cup racing this season, raced to second in men’s standing for his second podium in a row.
““It feels really good to be back racing GS and very happy to start building some consistency this season,” said Guimond. “Looking forward to racing again tomorrow.”
Kurt Oatway (Calgary, AB), competing in men’s sitting, missed a gate and skied down for a DNF in the first run.
At today’s FIS Ski World Cup women’s downhill in St. Anton (AUT), Valérie Grenier (St. Isidore, ON) finished 43rd. It was Grenier’s first World Cup downhill in nearly a year after sustaining injuries in fall racing downhill in Cortina last January.
And at the FIS Ski World Cup men’s slalom in Adelboden (SUI), Liam Wallace (Banff, AB) missed a gate and skied down for a DNF in his return to World Cup racing from an injury suffered last season. Other Canadian men racing today were Erik Read in 32nd and Simon Fournier who was also a DNF.
