Dylan Deschamps (SS/BA) and Evan Marineau (HP) both earned a spot on the World Championship team based on their performances this past season. However, they have made the decision to withdraw from Worlds to prioritize training with the goal of heading to the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in peak form. Alternate athletes have been selected in their place.
Todd Allison, High Performance Director for Freestyle Canada, commented on the team heading to the World Championships, “We’re excited about this team headed to Worlds. Earning a spot was highly competitive, with intense internal battles for selection. Some athletes are focusing on different paths, whether through training, preparation, or rehab, as they build toward the Olympics. The depth and quality of this team are impressive, and we’re eager to see how they perform on the world stage.”
The Road to Olympic Qualification
Beyond the pursuit of World Champion status, this competition carries additional significance as the final Method A Olympic qualifying event for Milano-Cortina 2026, adding even more weight to the competition for our athletes.
To earn a quota spot under Method A, an athlete must win at least two medals in designated competitions during the 2024/25 season. If they meet this requirement, they receive priority nomination to the Canadian Olympic Team for the 2026 Winter Games. Freestyle Canada’s Olympic Nomination Procedures and Method A designated competitions can be found here.
Current Method A qualified athletes include Mikaël Kingsbury (MO/DM), Cassie Sharpe (HP), and Amy Fraser (HP).
Several athletes are just one podium away from securing their Olympic spot, including Maïa Schwinghammer (MO/DM), Julien Viel (MO/DM), Olivia Asselin (SS/BA), Lewis Irving (AE), Rachael Karker (HP), and reigning World Champion Brendan Mackay (HP).
With the Mogul and Aerial FIS World Cup Finals concluding in Livigno on March 13th, the World Championships will be the final chance for athletes to qualify for Method A. Aerial and Halfpipe athletes will have one more shot, while Mogul and Slopestyle/Big Air athletes will have two opportunities to secure their spots.
