RIO DE JANEIRO β It was a solid week for the Canadian U17 team that competed at the 2025 U17 Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships, June 19-21, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Canada sent 18 athletes to the event and came away with nine medals (four silver and five bronze). In addition, the menβs freestyle team capture bronze in the team competition.
Menβs Results
All four of Canadaβs silver medals came in menβs freestyle. Torontoβs Jonrex Casa earned his at 51kg. He scored wins over Colombiaβs David Morales (10-0) and Panamaβs Kadir Quinones (14-4), before a loss to Puerto Ricoβs Cruz Little (10-0) in the final.
St. Laurent, Manitobaβs Beau Chartrand earned his silver at 80kg. He had victories over Arat Gonzalez of Mexico (13-0) and Alan Garcia of Puerto Rico (8-2), before dropping the final to American Isai Fernandez (10-0).
At 92kg, Langley, British Columbiaβs Harjot Shergill was in a round robin where he went 1-1, with a win over Alvaro Villa of Peru (10-0) and a loss to American James Smith (11-1). He qualified for the semifinal where he faced Allan De Sousa of Brazil and beat the hometown wrestler (11-10). That set up a rematch with Smith in the final, but unfortunately Shergill lost on criteria (4-4) and settled for silver.
The final silver came at 110kg where Surrey, British Columbiaβs Uday Billen was also in a round robin. He went 2-0 with wins over Colombiaβs Santiago Palomina (by fall), and Puerto Ricoβs Elias Betancourt (by fall). In the semifinal, he defeated Carlos Cabrales of Mexico (10-0). He faced American Alex Taylor in the final and was defeated (5-0).
The three bronze medals for the men went to: Pickering, Ontarioβs Aaharen Piranavan at 55kg; Smithville, Ontarioβs Nathan Nash at 60kg; and Port Coquitlam, British Columbiaβs Liam Gorton at 65kg.
Other results for the men included: Kitchener, Ontarioβs Ricky Parra fourth at 48kg and Calgaryβs Jack Aucoin sixth at 45kg.
Womenβs Results
The women featured a pair of bronze medalists: North Vancouver, British Columbiaβs Kamryn Mason at 49kg and Calgaryβs Clara Perry at 53kg.
Other womenβs results included: Garibaldi Highlands, British Columbiaβs Mariza Nasu fourth at 43kg; Surreyβs Khushi Jhalli fourth at 69kg; Fanny Bay, British Columbiaβs Jolina Healey fourth at 73kg; Surreyβs Iraabir Sooch seventh at 46kg; Williams Lake, British Columbiaβs Kai Pare seventh at 57kg; Surreyβs Natalie Wojciechowski seventh at 61kg and Cowichan Bay, British Columbiaβs Cassidy Pace seventh at 65kg.
