Canada wins its pool at U17 qualifier

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, November 24, 2023 – Canada defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21) Thursday, and advanced directly to the semifinals of the NORCECA Girls’ U17 Continental Championship in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Canada claimed the top spot in Pool A undefeated (3-0) and will play next in Saturday’s semifinals. The Dominican Republic, finishing in second place (2-1), will play in the quarterfinals today. The top three finishers in the event will qualify for the 2024 FIVB World Championship for the age group.

“As a team we really stepped up, especially when we were in a little bit of trouble in serve-receive and we were able to keep it together. There was a little bit of confidence in the third set. Now we have a rest day to get ready for the semifinals,” said Natalie Wahlgren (Burlington, Ont.), Canada’s top scorer with 15 points against Dominican Republic.

Previously in pool play, Canada opened with a win over Cuba (3-2), and then beat Costa Rica (3-1).

Puerto Rico claimed the top spot in the other pool, also advancing directly to the semifinals.
