Canadian taekwondo athletes demonstrated remarkable talent and determination at the Pan American President’s Cup held in Lima, Peru, bringing home a total of 18 medals across all divisions. Their impressive overall medal haul included 7 gold, 4 silver, and 7 bronze medals, earning Canada second place among all participating nations in the Senior Kyorugi competition.
In the senior division, Ella Brewster (Toronto, ON) and Nicholas Hoefling (Burlington, ON) led Canada by capturing gold medals in their respective weight classes and finishing as the top Female and Male athletes of the senior kyorugi tournament. In the Cadet Division, Alessia Fetta (Montreal, QC) earned the title of Female Cadet MVP for her outstanding performance.
Grand Master Young Choung, coach to Ella Brewster, highlighted the team’s progress: “This event provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on our performance and focus now on preparing by analyzing and reinforcing both our strengths and areas for improvement. I want to also send my applause to the Canadian athletes who gave their very best.”
Carla Bacco, coach to Nicholas Hoefling, shared her pride in the team: “It has been a long but very successful tournament for our Canadian team. We faced strong opponents from across the Pan American region and achieved excellent results including three MVP awards. As a coach, I am extremely proud of how our athletes performed and the spirit they showed throughout the competition.
The Senior Kyorugi National team athletes that competed will now turn their attention to the upcoming World Championships in Wuxi, China, scheduled for October 24th to 30th. Building on their successes in Peru, the athletes aim to carry this momentum into the next major international event.
