Canada Prevails Over Host Country at Pan Am Cup

Volleyball Canada – TRUJILLO, Peru, July 9, 2019 – Canada beat host Peru 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) in Group A of the Women’s Pan American Cup on Monday night.  

Canada now faces pool leader Dominican Republic today at 6 pm local (7 pm ET, 4 pm PT).

“Anytime we can earn a win against a quality opponent on their home soil, we’re happy with that,” said Canada’s coach Tom Black. “Our team improved last night, and were looking to perform better again against a very strong Dominican team.”

On the Canadian side, Kiera Van Ryk, was top scorer with 11 points. Canada was better than Peru in attack (35-32) and blocking (6-5), and had five service points. Peru’s Angela Leyva was the highest scorer of the game with 14 points.

Argentina, Canada, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Guatemala and Peru are in Pool A while Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, United States, Colombia and Puerto Rico are in Pool B playing in a round-robin format.

The pool winners will get direct tickets to the semifinal round, and the second and third placed teams of each pool will meet in crossed matches in the quarterfinals. The other teams will play for the seventh to 11th positions.
 
Canada won a bronze medal at last year’s Pan Am Cup, which was held in the Dominican Republic.
