Canada Games Council Launches Sustainable Sport Event Toolkit to Champion Environmental Responsibility

OTTAWA, ON  – The Canada Games Council (CGC) today announced the release of its comprehensive Sustainable Sport Event Toolkit, a vital resource that will support the Canada Games Host Societies in adopting more sustainable event hosting practices. Given this resource adds value to the sport and event hosting landscape, the CGC is making this resource publicly available for the sport community to encourage sustainable hosting. The Toolkit includes a detailed guide and a practical “Quick Wins” summary, offering tangible actions to minimize environmental impact and foster a greener future for Canadian sport.

This launch marks a significant step in the CGC’s environmental sustainability strategy, which underscores its commitment to preserving Canada’s sports landscape amidst growing climate challenges. The recently announced strategy outlines the CGC’s vision to integrate environmental sustainability into every facet of the Canada Games, uniting participants, partners, and fans in collective climate action.

“The Canada Games have a powerful platform to drive meaningful, lasting change for sustainable hosting practices,” said Kelly-Ann Paul, President & CEO of the Canada Games Council. “This Sustainable Sport Event Toolkit is a tangible action within our broader environmental strategy and will provide our Host Societies with the practical examples and tools they need to implement sustainable practices from governance and planning through to event execution. This highly useful toolkit is key to progressing on our sustainability journey and to building lasting legacies for our Host Societies and in Canadian communities.”

The toolkit is a manifestation of the CGC’s key commitments to Reduce Emissions, Measure and Report, Lead by Example, and Forge Relationships. The Toolkit’s content is structured using the Pillars of the CGC’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy; Energy and Climate, Circularity and Waste and Natural Regeneration.

“We are incredibly proud to launch this Sustainable Sport Event Toolkit, which reflects the dedication of the Canada Games Movement to environmental stewardship,” stated Catriona Le May Doan, Chair of the Canada Games Council. “This resource will empower our Host Societies to not only deliver exceptional sporting events but to do so in a way that prioritizes sustainability and leaves a positive environmental legacy. It’s about ensuring the health and vibrancy of our communities and our sporting landscape for generations to come.”

Both the Sustainable Sport Event Toolkit and the Quick Wins Summary are now available to download for free at https://www.canadagames.ca/about/sustainability. The CGC is confident that this resource will be a catalyst for climate action within the Canadian sport community, inspiring sustainable practices and fostering a collective commitment to a greener future. Collectively with its Sport, Community, Government and Corporate Partners, the CGC is building a legacy that goes beyond competition – one that makes a meaningful difference for the environment and the sports we love.

Financial investments from the Government of Canada have enabled the CGC to build capacity and expertise in this crucial area.
