SHERBROOKE – After four days of action at the Centre sportif de l’Université de Sherbrooke with athletes battling for national titles, Club aquatique Montréal (CAMO) will be going home with the overall team banner of the 2025 Speedo Canadian Short Course (25 m) Championships.
The winning team stayed on top of the rankings all weekend and ended with a total of 1293.50 points, over 200 points ahead of the second place, Pointe-Claire Swim Club. “We had high hopes for our swimmers, but they did even better than expected,” said Claude St-Jean, coach at CAMO. “With the meet being so late this year, we thought the swimmers would be tired, but they showed up strong and swam beautifully. Both our sprinters and distance swimmers truly rose up to the challenge.”
After winning the men’s banner for a few years, the overall team banner was a nice surprise. “We’ve had our eyes on that banner for a while now. Swimming in short course like that, at the end of the long course season, made it easier for swimmers to swim fast even though it was late in the season. We are very proud of our athletes; they did very well.”
Bridget Burton, from Island Swimming, was the top female performer after winning a total of four medals (3 gold, 1 silver) and swimming in six A finals. “I’m really happy with everything. It felt like all the pieces are finally starting to click together,” said the 20-year-old. “My goal is to make the national team in the next few years, and I think this meet was a step in the right direction.” The men’s banner was won by Eric Ginzburg, from RAMAC Aquatic Club, who swam in seven A finals and won a total of five medals (4 gold, 1 bronze). The winners of the paralympic program were Shelby Newkirk (Saskatoon Lasers Swim Club, 3 gold, 1 silver) and Jesse Canney (Fredericton Aquanaut Swim Team, 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze).
Para swimmers broke a total of 6 world records, 36 Americas’ records, and 14 Canadian records. Danielle Dorris (Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club) alone broke 4 of those world records (50-m backstroke, 50-m butterfly twice, 100-m medley) and 5 Americas’ records (50-m butterfly twice, 50-m backstroke, 100-m medley twice). Riley Martin (KISU Swim Club) broke the other 2 world records (200-m breaststroke, 75-m medley), as well as 9 Americas’ records (50-100-200-m freestyle, 50-100-m backstroke, 200-m breaststroke, 50-m butterfly, and 75-100-m medley). Eliane Dubois (Les Loutres) was the youngest swimmer of the meet at 12 years old and will be going home with 2 silver medals (200-m freestyle and 50-m backstroke).
