Branton Caps FISU Games with Second Medal for Canada

Canada saved its best for last at the FISU World University Games.

Port Lambton, Ont., native Shona Branton captured bronze in the women’s 100-m breaststroke Wednesday to double Canada’s medal total on the meet’s seventh and final day of competition in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Branton’s time of 1:07.75 was good for third behind American Emma Weber (1:07.09) and Barbara Mazurkiewicz of Poland (1:07.57).

“It means a lot. This is my first time getting to represent Canada ever, so getting to bring home a medal is so special,” said the 22-year-old, who trains with Paul Midgley at Western University in London, Ont. “I looked over at everyone and just to get to see everybody so excited in the stands I was just like, fighting back tears.”

Canada just missed another medal, as Ottawa’s Julie Brousseau came fourth in the women’s 400-m freestyle by 0.26 seconds with a time of 4:10.14. Toronto’s Benjamin Loewen was sixth in the men’s 200-m backstroke final (1:59.00) after qualifying with a personal best 1:58.78 in his semifinal.
