Biathlon Canada announces new Board of Directors and Sport Governance Code compliance

Biathlon Canada is pleased to announce the outcomes of its Annual Meeting held on October 16, 2024, during which the Board welcomed two new Directors along with four returning Directors following an open nomination process to establish the slate for the upcoming two-year term. Biathlon Canada is also proud that with the election of this slate of candidates, it has strengthened its diversity and now meets its gender equity requirements of no more than 60% of its members being of one gender, highlighting six female and four male Directors.

“We are thrilled to welcome Philippe Gauthier and Doug Hannum to the Biathlon Canada Board of Directors. Their fresh perspectives and diverse backgrounds will greatly enrich our discussions and initiatives as we continue to promote and develop the sport of biathlon in Canada. We look forward to their contributions and insights in the coming term.” Mike Walker, Board Chair.

Mike Walker was also re-elected as the Chair of the Board of Directors at the Board’s meeting immediately following the Annual Meeting, continuing to bring his extensive leadership experience to guide the Board in its mission.

“As Board Chair, I am immensely proud of the excellent work our Board has accomplished in recent years. Our commitment to best practices and our high governance and stewardship standards has culminated in Biathlon Canada being a model for other sports. Together, we are poised to build on our successes and embrace new opportunities for our athletes and community.” Mike Walker, Board Chair.

In addition, Biathlon Canada has updated its bylaws, making three key changes to strengthen its governance and to better align with the Canadian Sport Governance Code. These changes included establishing a permanent Athlete Director position on the Board, changing the method of electing the Board Chair, and establishing a standing committee on Governance and Ethics.

“These changes not only strengthen our organization but also reinforce our dedication to transparency, accountability, and the continued development of biathlon in Canada. The addition of an Athlete Director solidifies the athlete voice on the Board, ensuring that the athletes have access to affect aspects of the organization at the governance level and that Biathlon Canada remains an athlete centred organization.” Kerry Dankers, CEO.
