The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD), observed on December 3rd, is a moment to celebrate and amplify the vital contributions of persons with disabilities. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” resonates deeply with our shared mission to create a world where every voice is heard and valued.
At the Canadian Paralympic Committee, we are committed to advancing the global call for leadership, representation, and inclusion captured by the slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us.” This IDPwD, we aim to shine a light on the remarkable leadership of persons with disabilities in driving change—not just in sport but across society.
Our IDPwD Initiatives
This year, we’re shining a spotlight on Canadian Para athletes who exemplify leadership.
Across our social media channels, we’ll feature stories and reflections from Paralympians. Boccia athletes Alison Levine, Iulian Ciobanu, and Lance Cryderman will share their unique journeys to sport, their experiences as elite athletes, and what it means to be a Canadian with a disability. Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Nate Riech and Paris 2024 bronze medallist Heidi Peters will offer personal reflections on their identities as athletes with disabilities.
Our partners, who share our values, are also leading impactful initiatives throughout the week. Pfizer will reflect on their fellowship program where an employee worked alongside Andrea Nelson at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Petro-Canada is collaborating with Brianna Hennessy to share her leadership journey on social media, Air Canada will highlight their work to date in accessibility with Paralympians, and OLG will host a panel event for over 3,000 employees featuring Karolina Wisniewska and Bianca Borgella discussing the power of leadership.
