A great week for Canadian Ultimate: BC Summer Games, Maple Ridge, 2024

The BC Summer Games, taking place in Maple Ridge from July 17-21, will make history as the first Canadian provincial games to feature Ultimate in its lineup of events.

The inaugural Ultimate program will include teams from the 5 BC Games Zones: Kootenays, Thompson-Okanagan, Fraser River, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island. BC Ultimate (BCU) selected Coordinators for each zone, who recruited two coaches per team. Each zone held tryouts for athletes born in 2009, 2010, and 2011 which produced teams of 12. With 6 Female Matching and 6 Male Matching athletes, games will be played as Mixed, with 6 players on the field per team (3 FMP, 3 MMP), following the traditional 7×7 Mixed Ultimate rules.

The event includes a full round-robin of games, followed by Semi-Finals for the top 4 teams, and Bronze and Gold Medal Games. The medal ceremony will be on Sunday, July 21st, and will recognize the team with the highest Spirit of the Game score, further highlighting Ultimate’s emphasis on sportsmanship and respect.

This opportunity for young Ultimate Players across BC will help light the spark that Ultimate so easily instills in all. Brian Gisel, General Manager of BC Ultimate states that “The BC Summer Games are part of the Long Term Athlete Development Pathway, and the athletes getting this opportunity are getting a once-in-a-lifetime experience which we hope will help propel them to higher levels of the sport.”
