OTTAWA, ONTARIO – Speed Skating Canada is proud to unveil the list of Canadian speed skating officials that have received national and international upgrades ahead of the 2024-25 competition season.
A total of 32 individuals – representing seven provinces – had their officiating level upgraded after meeting the requirements set forth in the Officials’ Certification Program. This year’s list includes eight starters, six competitor stewards and five referees, as well as a handful of sport experts, e-timers, track stewards, clerks of the course, meet coordinators and lap counters.
To earn a national upgrade, an official must develop their craft through a series of on-ice and off-ice training and professional development, which includes completing technical courses, gathering competition experience under the supervision of senior officials, and meeting certain performance requirements, such as satisfactory evaluations.
“A big congratulations to all the Canadian officials selected for national and international upgrades ahead of the 2024-25 season. These individuals have worked tirelessly over the years to hone their skills – at competitions, clinics and educational workshops – and these upgrades are a testament of their passion and dedication to our sport. We’re grateful to every one of our incredible officials, who volunteer their time both on and off the ice to ensure a safe and fair competition environment for all participants,” shared Jonathon Cavar, Manager, Sport Pathway, Speed Skating Canada.
In addition to those upgraded at the national level, 15 Canadian officials were approved for upgrades by the International Skating Union late last week. This group includes eight referees, five competitor stewards, three starters and two sport experts. These newly upgraded Canadian officials can now be assigned to apprentice or officiate ISU-sanctioned competitions, including World Cups and World Championships.
Following these recent upgrades, Canada now has total of 58 approved officials on the ISU list, including 25 in short track and 33 in long track (33). The updated list can be found in ISU Communication No. 2645.
