muscles regulate oxygen consumption – Sport Science

Sport Science

A new study by researchers from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that an enzyme called FIH (Factor Inhibiting HIF) determines how muscles regulate oxygen consumption. Without the enzyme, muscles more quickly transition to anaerobic metabolism leading to the production of lactic acid and eventually exhaustion and cramping. The finding is of potential significance to elite athletes, who have been found to have higher levels of FIH in their muscles than others.
