DUTIES:

The Head Coach, Women’s Basketball is responsible for the coaching, management and coordination of the Women’s Basketball program. The objectives are to provide opportunities for athletically talented basketball players and develop them to their fullest potential as student-athletes. This position is responsible for operating under U SPORTS operating bylaws, Canada West policies, University policies, and align with the mission, vision, and values of the department.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for all phases of the women’s basketball program.

  • Interaction with athletes during the regular season and out of season, in both training and competitive situations
  • Recruitment and supervision of assistant coaches and/or other team support staff
  • Counsel and assist student-athletes academically, athletically, and personally
  • Development and implementation of yearly training plans

Administrative duties associated with head coaching responsibilities include:

  • Team selection
  • Following U SPORTS and Canada West guidelines for:
    • Eligibility
    • Athletic Financial Awards
    • Recruiting
    • Drug education
    • Code of ethics

Work collaboratively with:

  • TRU communications staff (e.g., scores, lineups), radio-TV press conferences
  • TRU alumni and Alumni Office (special events)
  • Athletic Director and Manager, High Performance Sport regarding:
    • Sport issues internally and externally
    • Scheduling of practices, competitions, and exhibitions
    • Year-end reports
  • Follow and practice fiscal responsibilities regarding the team budget
  • Liaise with administrative staff in a professional and respectful manner
  • Liaise with athletic therapy, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, university personnel, and faculty members in a professional and respectful manner
  • Coach the Varsity team to regional and national prominence with the overall goal of qualifying for Canada West playoffs

2. Responsible for the recruitment of prospective student-athletes and development of a recruiting plan

  • To establish overall goals for the recruitment of student-athletes, e.g., to yearly endeavor to attract the best student-athletes to the university, both long- and short-term
  • To develop a strategic process to effectively meet the recruiting goals of the TRU program
  • To implement the strategic process using effective techniques and resources in accordance with Canada West and U SPORTS policies and regulations
  • To review the appropriateness and effectiveness of the goals and process with the Director, Athletics and Recreation, and Manager, High Performance Sport

3. Encourage student athlete involvement with academic advisors and leaders [ie PACE – Pack Academic Excellence]

  • To support the need for a successful academic/athletic conclusion to each student-athlete’s experience such that upon completion of the student’s athletic eligibility the student has a qualified academic credential

4. Alumni Program

  • Assist and support the Alumni Office in relation to athletic team alums
  • Assist the Alumni Office in the development and planning of specific alumni events
  • Promote a relationship between the alumni and the current team
  • Create the development and maintenance of an alumni contribution program, e.g., writing part of a newsletter, sending thank-you notes to major donors

5. Fundraising Program (funds not used to fulfill the basic costs pertaining to league commitments)

  • To direct and support the team with the development of a fundraising program to enhance the student-athlete experience at Thompson Rivers University, such as:
    • Funding unique road trips or training camps
    • Honoraria for specialty coaches or staff
    • Special training equipment or technological programs
  • To conduct the program in accordance with CW and U SPORTS rules and regulations

6. Responsible for personal professional development and contributions in basketball.

  • To engage and/or cooperate in local, provincial, regional, and national programs, when appropriate
  • To attend conferences/workshops in an effort to keep current with associated fields of knowledge
  • Liaise, plan, and participate in the offering and development of academies, clinics, and camps

7. Responsible for service on committees and organizations both at TRU and externally

8. Responsible for administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Recreation and/or Manager, High Performance Sport.

  • Serve on Division and University committees
  • Attend and contribute at Divisional Meetings
  • Special projects as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Recreation and/or Manager, High Performance Sport

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
The successful candidate will possess a strong basketball coaching background, preferably at the University or College level.

Essential qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum Coaching Certification: NCCP Level III, or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years coaching experience and a proven track record of success, preferably at the University or national level, or equivalent
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to recruit
  • Proven track record, and a leadership style characterized by enthusiasm, integrity, and discipline
  • Knowledge of the academic system at the University
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and computer skills an asset
  • A proven record of integrity, high principles, and demonstrated skill in developing/motivating student-athletes both academically and athletically
  • A pleasant personality together with a positive attitude is essential
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, get along and work well with members of the department, supervisors, and other employees of the university
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector Check


Pay Band: $87,001.00 – $99,151.00 ( Admin Pay Band BH )
