The Wheelchair Rugby Canada Board of Directors is seeking skilled and enthusiastic individuals to join our board. We value diversity and are looking for candidates with leadership qualities, strategic thinking, financial acumen, and strong communication skills to enhance our board’s effectiveness.
Wheelchair Rugby Canada is a world leader in sport, advocating for wheelchair athletes and committed to excellence in all our programs. We operate within a competency-based governance model, and we currently have openings for:
- Directors at Large for candidates with experience in sponsorship, philanthropy, marketing and communications, finance, risk management, or legal, in either paid or volunteer settings.
The mission of Wheelchair Rugby Canada is to achieve excellence in wheelchair rugby at international competitions, support the development of the sport across Canada, and advocate for our community.
We do so by living our values of teamwork, integrity, excellence, and innovation at every level of our organization.
As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for:
- Oversight of the strategic plan
- Determining the mission of the organization and understanding its collective purpose
- Selecting, supporting, and evaluating the performance of the chief executive
- Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
- Fundraising and resource development
- Enhancing the organization’s public image
- Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization
- Ensuring legal and ethical integrity
- Overseeing risk management for the organization
Board members are expected to:
- Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs as well as understand its collective purpose
- Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements and board materials in advance of meetings
- Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization
- Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission
- Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to achieve the organization’s mission
- Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and influence public policy
- Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings
- Participate fully in a minimum of one or more committees or taskforces
- Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the community we serve
- Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization
- Uphold the legal duties and laws regarding nonprofit governance
- Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
- Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year,if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
- Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
- Adhere to Safe Sport policies
In addition to bringing a diversity of skills required by the organization at the time of nomination, ideal candidates will represent the diversity of our country including age, gender, geographical location, disability, etc., understand board governance and the Canadian Sports System. Bilingualism is considered an asset.
