“Grit” refers to a firmness of character, or the perseverance of effort in the presence of challenges. Research suggests creating opportunities for athletes to experience pride in their performance can develop grit, but only when success is attributed to their own effort. Success attributed to innate ability or superiority may result in reduced perseverance and commitment to goal attainment.
