Statement from Artistic Swimming Canada

Ottawa, March 14th, 2021 – Canada Artistic Swimming, through Jackie Buckingham, Chief Executive Officer, shared today, March 14, 2021, the following statement.

“Our priority is to ensure all athletes are safe. That they can enjoy, learn and compete in an environment that is free from abuse.”

“There are issues in our sport and we have taken steps to address those brought to our attention for a number of years now. In light of the testimonials recently received, we understand it wasn’t enough and we want to sincerely apologize for it.”

“We operate in a world that combines both the respect and well-being of our athletes as well as ultimate performance on the world stage. We understand that the latter cannot, under any circumstances, justify wrongdoing.”

“We commit to be a change leader to earn back the trust of our community and to begin to inspire a whole new generation of athletes. Over the next 5 days, we will provide more insights about specific actions as well as our revised safe sport plan going forward.”

“We invite our entire community and especially our provincial partners, athletes, and alumni to join us in leading the sport to a better place.”
