Canadian Foil Teams Qualify for Tokyo 2020

Over the weekend, the Canadian senior men’s and women’s foil teams both qualified for Tokyo 2020.

The women, who were at the World Cup in Kazan, Russia, qualified for the Olympics with a 16th place finish in Kazan. Jessica Zi Jia Guo (Toronto, ON), who had the best individual finish for the Canadian women, placed 15th, followed by Eleanor Harvey (Hamilton, ON), Alanna Goldie (Calgary, AB), and Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa, ON). Battling illness and injury, the ladies were able to overcome their adversity to secure their tickets to Tokyo.

Not wanting to miss out on the Olympic action, the senior men’s foil team, competing at the World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, finished 15th; also earning a qualifying spot at the upcoming Olympic games. Eli Schenkel (Richmond, BC), Maximilien van Haaster (Montreal, QC), Alex Cai (Montreal, QC), and Blake Broszus (Montreal, QC) will make up Canada’s men’s foil team.

This is the first time since 1988 that both men’s and women’s foil teams will be competing at the same Olympic games.
