Canada opened the Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship with a 11:0 victory against Group B opponent St. Kitts & Nevis. Christine Sinclair set the world’s all-time international goalscoring record with two first-half goals to bring her count to 185 international goals. Also for Canada, Adriana Leon registered her first four goal game while Ashley Lawrence scored twice and Jayde Riviere, Jessie Fleming and Jordyn Huitema each scored one goal.

“I think we’ve shown well the kind of impact that Canada can bring to a game,” said fullback Jayde Riviere, who scored her first international “A” goal against St. Kitts & Nevis on Wednesday. “We’ve shown that we’re here and that we are ready for this tournament. And now, we’re ready for our next game.”

Canada last played Jamaica to a 2:0 victory at the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship also at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas, with Nichelle Prince scoring both goals for Canada. While Canada qualified for their seventh FIFA Women’s World Cup through the championship, Jamaica earned their first-ever berth by finishing in third place at the confederation tournament.

“Jamaica have really good players that can make a match tough for any opposition,” said Kenneth Heiner-Møller, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Head Coach. “We need to make sure that we are ready and that we minimize their chances, Hopefully, we’ll also get a few chances and put the ball into the net.”

The team hopes to use the momentum of the 11:0 victory against St. Kitts & Nevis to get a result against Jamaica.

“This team is more confident than I’ve seen it in a long time, which is really exciting,” said forward Janine Beckie. “Jamaica is a fast-paced, athletically gifted team. They are a good quality team and they’ve gotten better over the last couple of years, so it’s going to be tough. We will need to take our game to another level. I think we played really well on Wednesday, but doing that on a higher stage is going to be important.”

After facing Jamaica, Canada will play Mexico on 4 February in their last Group B match after which the top two-nations in the group will cross over against the top-two nations in Group A. The two winners of those Concacaf Semi-finals on Friday 7 February will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as well as advance to the Sunday 9 February Concacaf Final. Both the Semi-finals and Final will be played in Carson, CA, USA near Los Angeles.
