Sport for Life Society – GATINEAU, QC – Building community, promoting healthy living and fostering team spirit. These are some of the objectives that will be discussed at the 2019 Sport for Life Canadian Summit during a four-person panel titled “Sport Legacies: Moving to Action on the Ground”, supported by Jumpstart and consisting of Tim Adams, Dean McIntosh, Dr. Laura Misener, and facilitated by Dr. David Legg. The Summit will be held in Gatineau, Quebec January 23 and 24.
The 2019 Panelists
Tim Adams is a CBC journalist who founded a soccer program in Edmonton called Free Footie that has grown into much more, giving over 4000 kids a year the chance to play soccer, hockey and basketball. He has aspirations to open multiple chapters of this program across Canada.
Dean McIntosh has been the Vice President of Events and Properties with Hockey Canada since 2016, hosting events like the World Junior Championship and the Women’s World Championship. Before that he worked in a variety of roles, including event manager for the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Dr. Laura Misener is an Associate Professor at Western University’s school of kinesiology. Her research is focused on how sport and the events associated with them can become instruments of social change, with an emphasis on community accessibility and social inclusion.
Dr. David Legg is the Chair of Mount Royal University’s physical education program. In the past he’s served as the president of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, and he’s soon to become the president of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity.
This panel is supported through a program partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. During the panel, these four thought leaders will strategize the best ways to introduce catalytic opportunities through sport. Their focus will be on creating social legacies beyond the typical infrastructure. Each will bring their unique perspective on how Canadians can create sport legacies in their own communities.
