A Trophy Celebrating an Exceptional Legacy

Montréal, August 23, 2025 – The RSEQ (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) is proud to announce that its provincial university football championship will now be known as the Jacques-Dussault Cup, honouring the remarkable and lasting impact of Jacques Dussault on the growth of football in Québec and across Canada. This new name replaces the Dunsmore Cup, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Québec university football history.

A Legendary Career

Few have left as deep an imprint on football as Jacques Dussault. Over more than five decades, he has played a central role in advancing football both nationally and internationally. A former player with the University of Ottawa and McGill University, Dussault began his coaching career in 1975. In 1982, he made history as the first French-speaking head coach in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Montreal Concordes.

His exceptional journey included coaching or contributing to the success of Acadia University, Mount Allison University, the Montreal Machine in the World League of American Football, the Montreal Alouettes and the Carabins at the Université de Montréal. His influence extended well beyond Canadian borders, with significant experiences in both the United States and France.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the sport, Dussault was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2023 and the Québec Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

“It is an honour to see the provincial championship now bear the name Jacques Dussault,” said Gustave Roel, Chief Executive Officer of the RSEQ. “His dedication, leadership, and impact continue to inspire the football community, and this trophy will stand as a living symbol for generations to come.”

A Trophy in His Image

To usher in this new era, the RSEQ will launch a call for proposals to select an artist or a design firm to create the Jacques-Dussault Cup. The creative process will be documented and shared throughout the season on the RSEQ’s social media platforms, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this symbolic piece. The official unveiling will take place at a press conference on the eve of the provincial university football championship final.
