Ottawa, ON – Rising Canadian taekwondo athletes delivered outstanding performances at the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion, Paraguay. Leading the way was Gabrielle Beaulieu (Lac Beauport, Quebec), who captured the gold medal in the (-67kg) division defeating Moyte Caicedo from Ecuador to earn Canada’s first ever gold at the Junior Pan American Games. The win also earns Beaulieu a Wildcard qualification into the 2027 Pan American Games to be held in Lima, Peru.
Also shining bright at this event was Maude Ricard (Quebec City, Quebec). Ricard put up a strong fight in the (-49kg) division, narrowly missing the podium after a bronze medal match.
“These results highlight the depth of talent and bright future of Canadian taekwondo”, said Taekwondo Canada High Performance Director Allan Wrigley. “At the 2021 Junior Pan Am Games, Canadian athletes not only medaled but went on to become regular Senior National Team members – with Josipa Kafadar ultimately earning the honour of representing Canada at the Olympic Games three years later.”
The recent results are another clear demonstration of the strength of Canada’s taekwondo clubs and coaches, whose commitment to developing athletes continues to pay dividends on the international stage.
