Canadian Stars Bouchard, Fernandez, Mboko, Andreescu, Stakusic, Marino to Compete in First Three Days of National Bank Open Main-Draw International

[MONTREAL, QC] July 26, 2025 – Canadian tennis fans are in for an exciting start to the 2025 National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Montreal, as some of the country’s biggest stars are set to compete over the first three days of main-draw play.

While awaiting the entry of the top 32 seeds, who have received a first-round bye, tournament organizers have confirmed that at least six Canadian women will take part in matches over the coming days, including:

  • Sunday (day session) – Marina Stakusic and Victoria Mboko
  • Sunday (night session) – Bianca Andreescu and Rebecca Marino
  • Monday (night session) – Eugenie Bouchard
  • Tuesday (session to be confirmed) – Leylah Annie Fernandez

Among the most notable storylines is the participation of Eugenie Bouchard, who announced earlier this week that she will retire from professional tennis following the tournament. The Montreal native, former World No. 5 and Wimbledon finalist, will compete in her final event on home soil, which represents a fitting farewell for one of Canada’s most iconic sports figures. She is scheduled to play Monday night against Colombia’s Emiliana Arango (No. 81).

Leylah Annie Fernandez (No. 36), currently Canada’s highest-ranked player, is coming off a strong run at the Citi Open, where she advanced to the final with a three-set win over World No. 12 Elena Rybakina earlier today. Fernandez is scheduled to return to Montreal on Monday after the final and will play her first match at the IGA Stadium on Tuesday against Maya Joint of Australia. Match time is still to be confirmed.

STAKUSIC AND MBOKO HEADLINE SUNDAY DAY SESSION

Sunday’s day session will open with Marina Stakusic (No. 142) taking on Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian (No. 49). Stakusic returns to competition after a short break to recover from an injury sustained post-Roland-Garros. This will mark her second main-draw appearance at the National Bank Open. In 2025, she reached the quarterfinals at two WTA 125 events and represented Canada at the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers in Japan, where she earned a singles win against Romania.

The session will close with Victoria Mboko (No. 88) facing Kimberly Birrell (No. 76) of Australia. The 18-year-old from Toronto will make her Montreal main-draw debut following a standout season that includes a 22-match win streak and a third-round finish at the French Open.

SUNDAY NIGHT SESSION FEATURES ANDREESCU AND MARINO

Former US Open and National Bank Open champion Bianca Andreescu (No. 188) will be taking on 2024 Wimbledon champion Czech player Barbora Krejcikova (No. 78). This will mark Andreescu’s seventh appearance at the tournament.

She’ll be followed by Rebecca Marino (No. 117), competing in her sixth National Bank Open main draw. Marino previously reached the round of 16 in 2021 and enters the event following a runner-up finish at the Ilkley Open in Great Britain. She will face off against French player Elsa Jaquemot (No. 96).
