MORELIA, MX – Five Canadians have come back from the first leg of the Americas Para Archery Cup and bring with them three medals, two silver and a bronze.
Jean-François Lavergne and Shawn Matheson competed in the recurve men’s open category, finishing 11th (540 points) and 14th (472 points), respectively. Lavergne faced off against Herlberto Alves Roca from Brazil in his first match, losing a close match by a score of 4-6. For his first match, Matheson faced off against Juan Diego Blas Fernández of Guatemala, also unfortunately dropping the match 0-6.
Daniel Comeau earned the 2nd place in the compound men’s open qualification round, with a score of 687. Kyle Tremblay and Chris Waterman were also in the same division. Tremblay shot 671 points and landed in 8th place, then unfortunately dropping his first match against 1st-ranked Kevin Polish (USA), losing 138-145. Waterman earned 641 points and 11th place, facing Brazilian Reinaldo Vagner Charao Ferreira in his first round, dropping the match 134-139. Comeau won his first match against Cristin David Correa Alvaran from Colombia, with a final score of 141-135 in favour of the Canadian. He was then able to defeat Charao Ferreira, who had recently defeated fellow Canadian Waterman, in the semi-final with a score of 142-140. That propelled Comeau into the gold medal match against Kevin Polish of USA. Comeau lost a very close final, still bringing home the silver medal for Canada.
Lavergne and Matheson then paired up to earn the bronze medal in the recurve open men’s doubles event, coming in third behind Mexico and 1st place Brazil. Comeau and Tremblay teamed up in the recurve men’s doubles event, facing off against the home country of Mexico in the semi-final. A win of 148-145 moved the Canadians into the final against the States, who came out on top with a score of 146-141; this still resulted in the Canadians earning the silver medal at the event.
After this event, the Para High Performance program looks toward the second stage of the Americas Para Archery Cup in Chicago, Illinois, next month. The team will be named shortly.
