Canadian Women & Sport is looking for dynamic and skilled leaders from across Canada to join its volunteer Board of Directors. We are seeking nominations for individuals to fill two positions to be elected to the Canadian Women & Sport Board of Directors on September 24, 2025.

As the leading voice and authority on gender equity and inclusion in sport for over 44 years, Canadian Women & Sport is leading the transformation of the Canadian sport system. From playground to podium to professional, our work in collaboration with sport leaders and organizations across the country is driving the creation of an equitable and inclusive sport system for girls and women.

In 2024-25, we directly impacted 832 sport, physical activity, and recreation organizations across Canada, collectively supporting an estimated 5,764 sport leaders from community, provincial and territorial, and national sport organizations from various provinces and territories.

In 2025-26, we will continue to champion gender equity in sport through our programs, research, online resources, and advocacy. This year will also see the implementation of our new 2025-2029 Strategic Plan. The Board of Directors plays a key role in our strategic milestones, and we look forward to welcoming in new voices and lived experiences to support our growth.

The current Canadian Women & Sport Board of Directors consists of:

  • Susan Irving, Director-at-Large
  • Catherine Meade, Director-at-Large
  • Lara Rooke, Director-at-Large
  • Kyam Shell-Schnitzer, Director-at-Large
  • Andrew Shibata, Director-at-Large
  • Trinh Tham, Director-at-Large

The following Board terms end as of September 24, 2025: 

1. Camille Wallace (end of final term)
2. Lara Rooke (end of first term)

The Nominations Committee is currently seeking candidates with any combination of the following competencies and experiences: 

  • Strategy and strategic planning
  • Previous non-profit and/or Board governance experience
  • Sport system experience
  • Revenue generation and sponsorship
  • Senior executive leadership experience
  • Legal and/or risk
  • Government relations
  • Media and public relations
  • Research and/or academia
  • DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), strong understanding of principles and practices

Additional preferences: 

  • Geographical representation across Canada, with priority for those residing outside of Ontario
  • Bilingualism (French – English)
  • Canadian Women & Sport is committed to reflecting and representing the diversity of Canada at all levels of the organization. Preference will be given to individuals from the following groups, as per our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion:

Term Limits and Responsibilities: 

Board terms are for three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. Those elected at the September 24, 2025 election will serve through to September 2028, with the option to renew for a second and final term.

The Board of Directors meets quarterly, including two virtual meetings and two in-person meetings per year. In-person board meetings typically span 1-2 business days, and board training involves an additional 1-3 business days annually. Meetings are generally held during working hours, and all related expenses are covered by the organization.

Committees meet monthly or quarterly, depending on their scope of work as outlined in their terms of reference.

Board member responsibilities include: 

  • Contributing to the execution of the strategic plan, as well as decisions on emergent strategic and governance matters;
  • Providing guidance and leadership to the CEO and staff as they implement the strategic and operational plans;
  • Chairing and/or participating on committees such as the Nominating, Governance, DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), Brand & Revenue, and Audit, Finance, Risk committees;
  • Approving annual budget and audit reports;
  • Contributing to the CEO annual evaluation;
  • Representing Canadian Women & Sport to stakeholders and acting as an ambassador to the organization.

Eligibility: 

  • Individuals of any gender and ability who are 18 years of age or older
  • Primarily reside and/or work in Canada
  • Have the power under law to contract (are legally capable and deemed an individual)
  • Who are not bankrupt
  • Who are not an employee or paid contractor of Canadian Women & Sport
  • Pass screening in according with Canadian Women & Sport’s screening policy (criminal record check and safe sport sanction check and self-disclosure)
  • Willing to participate in the Canadian Safe Sport Program, including completing mandatory training and agreeing to abide by the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS)

Timelines: 

  • July 4 – July 30: Call for Candidates
  • Mid-July: â€˜Ask Me Anything’ Webinar with CWS CEO & Nominating Committee Chair (details coming soon)
  • August 6: Successful candidates contacted for interviews
  • August 7 – August 15: Interviews (virtual)
  • August 22: Final decisions communicated to interviewed candidates
  • September 24: Elected Directors confirmed at the Annual General Meeting (virtual, must be able to attend)
