Position: Senior Manager, NextGen
Type: Full-time permanent, 35 hours per week
Reports to: High Performance Director

Location: This position is based out of our head office in Ottawa, Ontario, with a hybrid work model available for candidates residing in the Ottawa area. For candidates located outside of Ottawa, the role may be performed remotely, provided the successful candidate resides in a city with access to a major airport to accommodate frequent travel requirements.

Travel: The role requires extensive travel domestically and worldwide.

ABOUT THE JOB.

Reporting to the High Performance Director, the Senior Manager, NextGen is responsible for the leadership and management of Skate Canada’s NextGen programming. NextGen programming focuses on accelerated development opportunities for targeted Train to Compete and Train to Win athletes and their coaches. This is a full-time position that requires frequent travel domestically and worldwide.

LOCATION.

This position is based out of the Skate Canada office in Ottawa, ON at 261-1200 St. Laurent Boulevard, where we offer a hybrid work model. However, due to the extensive travel requirements of this role, we are open to candidates working remotely, provided they reside within reasonable proximity to a major airport to support frequent travel needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES.

1.Manage all aspects of Skate Canada’s NextGen programming, including but not limited to:

Junior International Competition Management:

  • Oversee the selection of athletes for Junior international competitions (including the Youth Olympic Winter Games), manage travel logistics, and ensure timely post-event reporting.

NextGen Training Camps & Monitoring:

  • Design, plan, and deliver all NextGen training camps and athlete sport monitoring programs, incorporating input from relevant stakeholders as required.

Athlete Funding Administration:

  • Plan, implement, and oversee the distribution of athlete funding in accordance with established guidelines and partnership agreements.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure all NextGen programming and participants adhere to Skate Canada and International Skating Union (ISU) rules, regulations, and standards.

Risk Management:

  • Implement and manage risk mitigation strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of NextGen Team members during all programs and events.

Liaison Role:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison between NextGen athletes, coaches, parents, and Skate Canada respective Section.

Novice International Development:

  • Oversee the management and delivery of Novice International development participation – including but not limited to athlete selection, travel logistics, post event reporting.

2. Provide leadership and direction to the Skate Canada Performance Excellence Department to ensure alignment with the strategic and operational plans and objectives:

  • Contribute to the strategic and operational planning processes related to Skate Canada’s Skating to Win
  • Prioritize and manage all tactics supporting the Skating to Win
  • Collaborate closely with the High Performance Director to ensure optimal coach and athlete transitions in the Podium Pathway from NextGen to Elite Programming.
  • Provide leadership to operational committees or working groups as required, and partner with the Performance Excellence Senior Analyst to provide support and guidance to the Section Technical Directors.
  • Provide input to other functional areas of the organization which interact with athletes and coaches in Skate Canada’s NextGen programming, including Communications, Marketing, Safe Sport, and others, to ensure cohesive program delivery. 

3. Develop revenue and expense budget for NextGen programming; ensure that Departmental budget submissions reflect the Association’s objectives and initiates corrective actions as necessary:

  • Develop and manage the annual work plan for NextGen programming outlining clear goals, objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Manage the completion of all required sport funding applications and all reporting and accountability requirements (including Sport Canada, Own The Podium) as related to NextGen programming. 

4. Build and maintain positive, effective working relationships with key stakeholders, in particular:

  • Train to Compete and Train to Win identified Junior teams/athletes and their coaching teams.
  • Section personnel to ensure seamless delivery of NextGen programming through the Podium Pathway.
  • Funding and delivery partners, such as the Canadian Olympic Committee and Own the Podium.
  • Section Technical leadership. 

5. Perform the duties stated as a responsible employee of the Association observing and supporting all policies and procedures as set by the Board of Directors and observing all policies and requirements as outlined by Skate Canada.

6. Perform additional duties as required to support the achievement of Skate Canada’s objectives.

  • Strives for excellence and inspires high standards in others, ensuring quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement in program delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND KEY SKILLS.

  • 3-year College Diploma or University degree in Sport Management, Education or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum five to seven years’ progressive experience in high performance sport, athlete development, program/team management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Advanced MS Office Skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Skate Canada Core Programs.
  • Ability to coach, guide, and handle difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Fluency in English is required, fluency in French is considered an asset.
  • Excellent skills in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and work within a team; set and achieve objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, and self-directed.
  • Experience working with volunteers is an asset.
  • Possesses a high standard of professional integrity with the ability to handle sensitive information in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Must hold a valid passport to accommodate international travel.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS.

  • Additional travel for the purposes of meetings and events.
  • Ability to work overtime as required to meet the fluctuating needs in a timely manner.
  • Online learning and participant consent form for the Canadian Safe Sport Program (CSSP).

COMMITMENT.

This is a full-time, permanent position.

COMPENSATION.

  • The salary range for this position is $81,446 to $101,808 annually, with a comprehensive benefits package available following a three-month eligibility period.
  • Health, Vision, Dental, LTD, STD and Life Insurance (employee premiums covered by Skate Canada; family dental coverage is optional and available at employee expense).
  • RRSP matching.
  • Fitness benefit – $350 annually.
