Canada wins nine medals at U17 Pan-Am Championships

RIO DE JANEIRO – It was a solid week for the Canadian U17 team that competed at the 2025 U17 Pan-American (Pan-Am) Championships, June 19-21, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Canada sent 18 athletes to the event and came away with nine medals (four silver and five bronze).  In addition, the men’s freestyle team capture bronze in the team competition. 

Men’s Results
All four of Canada’s silver medals came in men’s freestyle. Toronto’s Jonrex Casa earned his at 51kg. He scored wins over Colombia’s David Morales (10-0) and Panama’s Kadir Quinones (14-4), before a loss to Puerto Rico’s Cruz Little (10-0) in the final. 

St. Laurent, Manitoba’s Beau Chartrand earned his silver at 80kg.  He had victories over Arat Gonzalez of Mexico (13-0) and Alan Garcia of Puerto Rico (8-2), before dropping the final to American Isai Fernandez (10-0). 

At 92kg, Langley, British Columbia’s Harjot Shergill was in a round robin where he went 1-1, with a win over Alvaro Villa of Peru (10-0) and a loss to American James Smith (11-1). He qualified for the semifinal where he faced Allan De Sousa of Brazil and beat the hometown wrestler (11-10). That set up a rematch with Smith in the final, but unfortunately Shergill lost on criteria (4-4) and settled for silver. 

The final silver came at 110kg where Surrey, British Columbia’s Uday Billen was also in a round robin. He went 2-0 with wins over Colombia’s Santiago Palomina (by fall), and Puerto Rico’s Elias Betancourt (by fall). In the semifinal, he defeated Carlos Cabrales of Mexico (10-0). He faced American Alex Taylor in the final and was defeated (5-0). 

The three bronze medals for the men went to: Pickering, Ontario’s Aaharen Piranavan at 55kg; Smithville, Ontario’s Nathan Nash at 60kg; and Port Coquitlam, British Columbia’s Liam Gorton at 65kg. 

Other results for the men included: Kitchener, Ontario’s Ricky Parra fourth at 48kg and Calgary’s Jack Aucoin sixth at 45kg. 

Women’s Results
The women featured a pair of bronze medalists: North Vancouver, British Columbia’s Kamryn Mason at 49kg and Calgary’s Clara Perry at 53kg.

Other women’s results included: Garibaldi Highlands, British Columbia’s Mariza Nasu fourth at 43kg; Surrey’s Khushi Jhalli fourth at 69kg; Fanny Bay, British Columbia’s Jolina Healey fourth at 73kg; Surrey’s Iraabir Sooch seventh at 46kg; Williams Lake, British Columbia’s Kai Pare seventh at 57kg; Surrey’s Natalie Wojciechowski seventh at 61kg and Cowichan Bay, British Columbia’s Cassidy Pace seventh at 65kg.
