TOKYO, JAPAN (April 19, 2025) – The six top figure skating nations gathered in Tokyo, Japan, this week for the ISU World Team Trophy 2025. The Canadian team finished fifth with 72 points, while the United States claimed the top spot with 126.
Two years ago, in the last edition of the competition, Canada finished sixth.
Piper Gilles (Toronto, Ontario) and Paul Poirier (Unionville, Ontario) were Canada’s top performers, finishing second in both ice dance programs. They delivered a strong free dance that pushed reigning world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA), ultimately falling short by just 1.6 points.
The Canadian ice dancers earned a season-best score of 131.91 points for their free dance. Their total score of 219.06 was also a season high.
“We improved on our result from two years ago!” said Piper Gilles, Canada’s team captain. “We all had a lot of fun this week and most importantly, we were there to cheer on our teammates. We felt the support and encouragement, which makes a big difference. We’re getting closer to those medals, and we’re just super proud of this team.”
Gilles and Poirier’s second-place finishes earned Canada 11 points each.
Over the weekend, Deanna Stellato-Dudek (Chicago, United States) and Maxime Deschamps (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec) delivered consistent performances in both pairs programs, finishing fourth in each.
The 2024 world champions helped the country add 18 points with their performances.
In the individual events, Madeline Schizas (Oakville, Ontario), the reigning national champion, and Sara-Maude Dupuis (Montreal, Quebec), bronze medalist at the 2024 Tallinn Trophy, represented Canada in the women’s competition. Schizas placed sixth in the short program before finishing seventh in the free skate.
Dupuis finished in the top 10 in both events.
Finally, in the men’s competition, Roman Sadovsky (Vaughan, Ontario) finished ninth in both programs, achieving his best short program of the season with a score of 84.75. Aleksa Rakic (Burnaby, British Columbia) earned the tenth-best score in the short program before finishing 11th in the free skate.
Team USA was joined on the podium by Team Japan (110) and Team Italy (86).
The ISU World Team Trophy 2025 was the final competition of the season. An exhibition gala will be held on Sunday to close the event.
