Archery Canada is excited by the news that the compound mixed team event has been added to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic programme. This, in combination with the recurve events already featured on the programme, brings the total gold medal count up for grabs in archery to six.
This marks a significant step forward for archery, as it is the first time since 1972 that a new bow discipline is being introduced at the Games. Compound has been contested at the World Games for over a decade and is featured on the Paralympic programme already, so bringing into the Olympic spotlight is an exciting development.
Chris Perkins, an accomplished compound archer and bronze medallist at the 2022 World Games for Canada, was thrilled to hear the news, as it is a positive stepping stone for the sport moving forward.
“I think it’s safe to say on behalf of every compound archer who’s been competing on a world level – finally! As a World Champion, having the opportunity to potentially go to the Olympics and chase that podium is something I would argue every athlete dreams of. I believe this will give us the opportunity that we have longed for to showcase the different bow types. I foresee offering both disciplines will bring a wider audience to viewership and show just how popular the sport of archery is!”
Aaron Bull, President of Archery Canada, also shared his thoughts on how the news will carve a path forward for the organization.
“This is great news for the sport of archery and Canada. We have thousands of compound athletes including previous world champions who will be looking to represent the maple leaf in LA 28. Now, we need to go to work and raise additional funds to support our athletes as they will look to secure quota spots for 2028.”
There aren’t many details to share right now, but keep an eye out on Archery Canada’s social media. Further details about the competition will be released as the Olympics approach, so for now it’s time to celebrate this milestone.
