Canmore Announced as 2029 BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup Host

Canmore, AB – February 24, 2025 – Biathlon Canada is thrilled to announce that Canmore, Alberta, has been selected as the host venue for the BMW IBU World Cup in March 2029. This prestigious event will mark a milestone in the sport’s growth in Canada and is a critical part of the long-term high performance plan leading up to the 2034 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

In collaboration with the US Biathlon Association, Biathlon Canada has developed a long-term hosting strategy aimed at elevating the profile of biathlon in North America, strengthening infrastructure, and bringing the highest level of competition to this side of the world. The Canmore Nordic Centre and The Alberta Event Hosting Society for Biathlon (AEHSB) will play key roles in the preparation, management and execution of this World Cup event in 2029.

“We are excited to bring the BMW IBU World Cup to Canmore again in 2029,” said Kerry Dankers, CEO of Biathlon Canada. “This event will not only showcase the incredible talent and excitement of biathlon but also demonstrate our commitment to developing biathlon in Canada and to being a permanent spot on the IBU World Cup tour. The long-term hosting plan we’ve established with US Biathlon reflects our shared vision of strengthening a North American presence in the sport, with the 2034 Olympics in Salt Lake City as the pinnacle.”

The event will be held at the renowned Canmore Nordic Centre, a venue with a legacy of hosting major international biathlon and cross-country skiing events. With its stunning mountain backdrop and brand new Biathlon Building, Canmore has proven itself as a premier destination for winter sports.

“We look forward to hosting the BMW IBU World Cup in 2029 and to continue to develop Canmore’s legacy as a hub for international winter sports,” said Ken Davies, Organizing Committee Chair of the AEHSB. “With every World Cup hosted in Canada, we create a lasting impact on biathletes, our Canadian infrastructure, and the sport community.”

This announcement follows strong collaboration between Biathlon Canada, AEHSB, and the Canmore Nordic Centre, all of whom are dedicated to growing biathlon in Canada and fostering the next generation of biathletes. Canmore’s selection marks a key milestone in that journey, and the World Cup event will provide a valuable opportunity to the community and a dream goal for Canadian biathletes to stand on a home podium.

As preparations for the 2029 event begin, Biathlon Canada and its partners are focused on building on the momentum, ensuring that the growth of the sport continues to shine across the continent.
