In assuming the mandate for safe sport in Canada, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) stepped back and reviewed its organizational strategy and structure so that it is fit for purpose as a broader sport integrity agency. While this work is ongoing, below are a few important updates.
The CCES is well on its way to establishing a new strategic plan with a clear focus on safe, clean, and fair sport. The plan will focus on the integrity issues of safe sport, anti-doping, and competition manipulation alongside a significant commitment to education and prevention. It will also address preparation for emerging threats to sport integrity. We look forward to sharing this with you in the coming months.
We have added two new members to our Board of Directors with expertise in areas crucial to safe sport and the administration of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS). Read about their appointment and experience.
Acting upon the feedback we have heard throughout the last several months, the CCES has also further formalized its independence from sport. In this regard, the CCES’s Board has passed a Resolution on Independence to reinforce the organization’s unique and separate status and so that the sport community — and athletes, in particular — can have trust and confidence in the CCES and its operations.
Given the critical importance of independence, the CCES has made the decision to move on from the work historically done using the True Sport brand. While we continue to believe strongly in the values inherent in the True Sport principles, we believe we must first and foremost focus on our mandate as an independent regulator of sport integrity. This means passing the baton and letting others build upon the comprehensive True Sport foundation already in place. Rest assured, the CCES will continue to place a strong emphasis on education and prevention focused through the lens of a national sport integrity regulator and will remain values-based in all of our work. More news on this will come soon.
We have met with the Future of Sport in Canada Commission on two occasions to reinforce the importance of an independent sport integrity agency in Canada. We have strongly recommended the introduction of legislation to bolster authority, resources, and tools to facilitate integrity in sport going forward. We look forward to ongoing communication with the Commission and acting on any future recommendations.
As we continue to evolve our organization towards a comprehensive sport integrity agency, please feel free to offer your thoughts and suggestions. Your feedback is always welcome and serves to strengthen the CCES and the integrity of sport in Canada.
