Jeff Read Leads Canadians with 10th Place in World Championships Super-G
Calgary, Alta. (February 7, 2025) — The men’s racing got underway today at the 2025 FIS World Ski Championships in Saalbach, Austria with the super-G (SG) and it was Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) leading the Canadians with a 10th place finish.
On a beautiful day, in front of over 15,000 fans, Read was the 17th man out of the start and despite a slow first section, got faster down the course to finish with a world championships career best 10th in the super-G. This is Reads fourth world championships, his 12th world championships start and he’s coming off a bronze medal in the team parallel at the last world championships in 2023 in Courchevel-Méribel.
“A lot of hype and a lot of pressure for today’s race with it being a world championships,” said Read. “It took execution on the absolute limit today and the margin for error was really small. I had some good sections today and happy with a top 10, my best result this season.”
Riley Seger (North Vancouver, BC) making his first world championships start raced to a 20th place finish.
“The nerves were a little high today so I really tried to focus on what I needed to do,” said Seger. “It’s a really fun track with a little bit of everything, turns, speed, jumps and gliding. I’m somewhat happy with today’s result but would’ve liked a little more.“
Other Canadians competing today were James Crawford (Toronto, ON), the reigning SG world champion, placing 27th and Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC) in 28th place. Cameron Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) did not start today’s race after a fall in Thursday’s training has him being evaluated for a knee injury.
Championship racing continues on Saturday February 8th with the women’s downhill and wraps up with the men’s slalom on Sunday February 16th. For more information on the world championships, including the full schedule, please visit the FIS website at fis-ski.com.
