Cameron Alexander Fifth in World Cup Super-G
Calgary, AB. (Dec 20, 2024) — Cameron Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) raced to fifth place in today’s FIS Ski World Cup men’s super-G (SG) in Val Gardena – Groeden (ITA). This is Alexander’s sixth career top five, his second consecutive SG top 10 in Val Gardena and a career best in Val Gardena.
Racing on the 2.1 kilometer Saslong super-G course, in the second of eight SG races this season, Alexander was fourth out of the gate, sat in the leaders chair for a few racers before settling into fifth place just .14 of a second off the podium.
“This hill suits me and how I ski and felt really good about my skiing and how I executed today,” said Alexander. “I thought that it could be an opportunity starting early today, but you just never know. It’s always a good feeling to come down and see the greenlight and be in the leader’s chair, but people can jump up from anywhere here in Val Gardena so it was a bit of a long wait at the bottom.”
“Feels great to get a PB here and to be back in the super-G top 10 (season standings), especially after a tough couple of races in Beaver Creek. Feel like I’m in a great spot heading into tomorrow’s downhill.”
James Crawford (Toronto, ON) finished 13th today for his sixth career top 15 in Val Gardena and Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC) rounded out the Canadians securing points today finishing 26th coming from starting 55th. Kyle Alexander (North Vancouver, BC was 48th today, Riley Seger (North Vancouver, BC) 53rd and Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) slid out and missed a gate before skiing to the bottom for a DNF.
Sherret Fourth in Innichen
India Sherret (Cranbrook, BC) secured her fourth top 5 in four races this season with a fourth place finish in the FIS Ski Cross World Cup race in Innichen (ITA). Racing on the turn packed course, on a quick turnaround after Canada’s success in Arosa (link) on Tuesday, Sherrit was the top Canadian on a track where Canada has won nine times.
Abby McEwen (Edmonton, AB) finished sixth today, tying her World Cup career best, and giving her back to back races with six place finishes. Courtney Hoffos (Windermere, BC) in just her second race back from injury was 9th today, Hannah Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) 11th and Marielle Thompson (Whistler, BC) 13th.
On the men’s side in Innichen, Jared Schmidt (Ottawa, ON) was the top Canadian in 10th, Kevin Drury (Toronto, ON) 11th, Reece Howden (Chilliwack, BC) 16th and Kris Mahler (Canmore, AB) 18th.
Oatway Second Para Alpine Giant Slalom
At today’s FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup Giant Slalom in Courchevel (FRA), Kurt Oatway (Calgary, AB), took second place for his fifth consecutive podium in five races this season.
Holding down third place after the first run, Oatway delivered the fastest second run to claim second place, just .21 of a second from the win.
“First run went pretty well today, and it was so close that I knew anything was possible in the second run,” said Oatway. “I really focused on inspection before the second run to see where I could make up some time. It wasn’t perfect but skied the bottom half really well and feels great to take second.”
“Five podiums in five World Cup races is a first for me! It’s really great momentum and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season after a little break for Christmas at home with the family before the season kicks up again in January.”
