Working with the Head Coach, you will assist in creating a culture that embraces and supports the development of student-athletes. The Assistant Coach is an integral member of the team and will also have the opportunity to enhance the program through recruitment, partnerships, regional engagement and advancement.

This position is located onsite in Kingston, Ontario and flexible work hours, including evening and weekends are required to meet program needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Head Coach, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of the football program at Queen’s University.
Under the direction of the Head Coach, this position collaborates with other members of the Athletics and Recreation department to ensure the appropriate level of service and support is provided to the team. Participating as a member of the High Performance Sport unit, the incumbent works in close cooperation with the Manager, High Performance Sport Operations and Compliance and Manager, Athlete Education, Training and Leadership Development on the day-to-day operation of the program.
The incumbent assists in creating a departmental culture that embraces and supports athletes, coaches, and teams in the pursuit of excellence and contributes to the formulation of programs and services that support general program development and the holistic needs of inter-university athletes.
In addition to sport specific coaching duties, the incumbent will assume supporting roles in the development and implementation of education, training, special projects and/or administrative functions that support evolving sport trends, programs, and services within high performance sport, which enhance the holistic needs of student-athletes and the overall high performance environment.
Community interaction and revenue generation is a key strategic priority for Athletics and Recreation (A&R). This will require close interaction with all other units within the Athletic and Recreation department, as well as the Alumni, the Office of Advancement, community partners, media and other related business and sport groups in the Kingston area.
Coaching (approx. 75%)
- Promotes a culture of inclusion that embodies A&R values, with a commitment to the university’s equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion initiatives designed to foster an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming work environment for individuals with diverse backgrounds and identities.
- Under the direction of the Head Coach, perform coaching duties as assigned in a manner that is consistent with the operation of a successful inter-university sport program. Duties include involvement in:
- Team selection
- Team and individual goal setting
- Individual skill acquisition and refinement programs
- In/off season strength and conditioning programs
- Input into season planning, offensive tactical and technical preparation
- Practice planning, preparation, and implementation
- Game preparation, management, and evaluation
- Scouting, tape breakdown, and evaluation
- Establishing athlete performance targets, evaluation frameworks, and feedback mechanisms
- Program evaluation
- Maintenance of regular contact with athletes
- Assist with the implementation of a comprehensive and effective national athlete recruitment strategy and plan. Take on a key role in coordinating recruiting efforts for the football program.
- Stay current with knowledge, trends, and practices necessary to assist with building and maintaining a nationally competitive program. Where requested, attend league meetings, ensure compliance with all league regulations, and maintain positive relationships with other sport governing bodies at the local, regional, provincial, national, and professional levels.
- Provide administrative assistance and support, attending meetings and assisting with day-to-day requirements of the program, as requested.
- Under the direction of the Head Coach, ensure that training, competition, and use of equipment are conducted safely.
- Maintain a high profile in the sport locally, provincially, and nationally by acting as an ambassador and resource representing the team and university in public speaking appearances, clinics, and camps. Enhance the visibility and image of the program and university to contribute to overall sport development in the community, region, and province.
- Upon request, assist the Marketing, Communication, and Events Unit by collaborating on the development and implementation of a comprehensive sport promotion plan. The plan shall include strategies for marketing, communication, and promotion of the program; building campus and community awareness; increasing attendance at games; engaging alumni and booster clubs in fundraising initiatives; and activating team personnel in events that promote and raise revenues.
- As directed by the Head Coach, assist other members of the A&R units to support athlete performance, such as injury prevention, management and rehabilitation, strength and conditioning programs, and academic support programs (e.g., Student-Athlete Academic Mentoring).
- Assist in fundraising activities and programs in support of the program (e.g., summer camps, technical clinics, summer leagues, fundraising tournaments, alumni initiatives).
- Interact with and support other varsity team programs, participate in department initiatives, and attend department events and activities.
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in sport and in the workplace.
- Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
Leadership and Services (approx. 25%)
- The assistant coach is an integral member of the A&R team and is expected to support the department’s priorities and initiatives, participate in department activities, attend events, and contribute to departmental work.
- At the request of the Director, assume supporting roles in the development and implementation of education, training, special projects, and administrative functions that support evolving sport trends and services within high-performance sport. These efforts enhance the holistic needs of student-athletes and the overall high-performance environment (e.g., I-EDIAA/Safe Sport, academic mentoring, strength and conditioning, coach professional development, varsity sports operations).
- Where requested, serve on departmental or campus committees, working groups, and task forces.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director or Executive Director of Athletics & Recreation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 3-year post-secondary education, preferably in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sport Administration, or Sport Management. University degree preferred.
- Previous coaching experience (3+ years) working in a provincial and/or national high-performance sport environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of sport coaching systems and strategies, with the ability to teach, coach, and prepare for practice and competitions at an elite level.
- Experience developing 18-25 year-old high-performance athletes towards provincial, national, and international standards.
- Fully certified as a Performance Coach (Level 3 equivalent) NCCP, and actively pursuing Advanced Performance Coach or High-Performance Coach (Level 4/5) status (preferred).
- Demonstrated leadership, program development, and athlete development skills at a high-performance level.
- Must be (or become upon hiring) a Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC) or Registered Coach with the Coaching Association of Canada (preferred).
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
- Valid Province of Ontario Class G driver’s license required.
- Consideration may be given for the equivalent combination of education and experience.
